Patients – Activate! December 21st Initial Meeting

There’s no better time than now to tap into your power to inform policymakers on the needs and desires of the medical cannabis community.  The forthcoming legislative session will cover a number of cannabis-related issues that will crucially affect medical cannabis patients, including rules for product testing and labeling, expanding the list of qualifying conditions, OUI criteria, and much more.

The implementation and rulemaking of the legalization initiative will also be a hot topic this session, and policymakers will need to hear from patients to make sure the medical program and patient access to cannabis is protected, not folded into the new adult use framework.

In 2010 and 2011, I was honored to be a part of a diverse group of cannabis activists called ADAC (Affirmative Defense Action Coalition).  Our work resulted in the passage of LD1296, which re-established the affirmative medical defense, protected patient privacy, and made several other improvements to our medical cannabis program.  I was inspired by the fellowship and cooperation in that group, congruent with the spirit of healing cannabis brings to us all.

The difficult decision to vote for or against Initiative #1 created significant division in Maine’s cannabis community.  Now is the time to put aside our differences and work together as stewards of this healing plant.  I invite you to join me on December 14th to form a unified grass-roots cannabis activism effort.

See you there,

Dr. Dustin Sulak

Integr8 Caregiver Survey

Screen Shot 2016-12-06 at 4

As the field of medical cannabis advances, our doctors and nurse practitioners are helping patients get better results by making more specific recommendations for dosage and delivery methods.  While our patients often have difficulty finding products compatible with these recommendations, we also hear from hundreds of caregivers that are growing and producing excellent products, many of which are tested for cannabinoid potency at Tested Labs.

To help patients connect with the right caregivers, we’ve created a brief caregiver survey.  The results will be posted in our office waiting rooms, organized by county, and updated monthly.

If you are a caregiver, and you’d like to be listed in our directory, please take 1 minute to fill out the survey.

Legalization Passed…  What’s Next?

Many patients wonder if they will continue to need a medical cannabis certification now that Initiative #1 to “Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol” passed.  Here are some facts to consider:

  • Opponents of the initiative have requested a ballot recount due to the small margin of victory, just over 4,000 votes (less than 1% of the total votes).  This recount will delay certification of the results, and if major errors are identified, could change the outcome of the vote.
  • In the likely event that the initiative still wins after the recount, the law will go into effect 30 days after the election results are proclaimed by Governor LePage.  Adults 21 years of age or older will be able to grow up to 6 flowering plants and use, possess or transport up to 2.5 ounces of prepared cannabis.
  • Governor LePage has threatened to obstruct the law’s implementation pending communication from President-elect Trump’s administration.
  • Retail ‘adult use’ cannabis will not be available for purchase until late 2018 or 2019.  Until then, a medical cannabis certification will be required to purchase cannabis from a dispensary or caregiver.
  • Patients with a medical cannabis certification will not have to pay an additional 10% sales tax on adult use cannabis.
  • By following up to renew your certification, you can continue a  therapeutic relationship with your Integr8 medical provider, who can offer personalized guidance on maximizing benefit and minimizing side effects of cannabis, and guide you in other aspects of your health.
  • Many employers, educational institutions, and medical providers managing concurrent treatments will allow cannabis use only if it is recommended by a physician or nurse practitioner as part of your medical treatment.  Integr8 will continue to support our patients with communication to employers and other healthcare providers.
